News is simply what is new. It’s something that’s current and that will be of interest to a wide audience.
It must be informative, educational or entertaining and have a geographic relevance to the area in which you/your business is based.
It must also have a human interest element. Readers/viewers/listeners become emotionally involved in stories about children or animals.
They relate to people like themselves, those of the same gender, age or have similar interests. Other stories can evoke humour, sympathy, anger etc.
People are also intrigued by anything unusual or out of the ordinary. The quirky things, the stories that make you smile or say ‘well I never’.
Anything overtly commercial is not classed as news, so the media will expect you to place a paid for advert to promote this.
Simply hosting a paid for event is not enough, there needs to be a human angle or a point of significant interest.
Big news stories impact on a mass of people.
