THE SWAN at Bampton is celebrating this week after being named for the second year running as one of the top 50 gastropubs in the country at an industry-wide awards ceremony in York recently (January 29, 2018).
The multi-award-winning pub has polled in at 28 this year and received a special award as the highest climber in the list, as in 2017 it was positioned just inside the chart at 50.
Chef-patron Paul Berry, who co-owns The Swan with his wife and fellow award-winning chef Donna, said: “We’re thrilled to bits and can’t stop smiling. Last year we were delighted to get into this elite group of pubs with chefs and teams who are at the very top of their game, but now to have moved so much further down the list and closer to the top 20 is amazing. We’re in such great company, it’s amazing!
“The ‘Estrella Damm’ Top 50 Gastropub Awards are voted for by a group with members including food writers, executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators. We’re the industry’s choice and are delighted to be part of these awards again this year.”
The ceremony is organised by the publican’s publication The Morning Advertiser, which says the top 50 is the definitive list of the best gastropubs in Britain.
The Morning Advertiser’s Editor, Ed Bedington said in The Morning Advertiser earlier in January: “The Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list highlights the great work and culinary importance of some of the most unique pubs in the UK.”
The Swan, which is an AA Four Star Gold Inn and the oldest pub in Bampton, has scooped a plethora of other awards for its food in the past few months and years, including being voted Best Dining Pub for 2018 in the Trencherman Awards and receiving a Gold Tourism Pub award in the 2017 Devon Tourism Awards. It also has two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence as well.
Paul added: “The AA inspector said we were really thinking outside the box and that was a huge compliment.”
The team has a passion for food and embraces the use of produce from the area to create some real pub classics, as well as some more modern English dishes.
Donna said: “We try to keep our dishes simple yet bursting with flavour and imagination. Our kitchen produces everything we serve here at the pub and we’re really proud of each and every dish we produce. Awards like these are a testament to our team and our local suppliers too, whose support we rely on.”
The Swan’s menu is created from fresh, seasonal ingredients, sourced from nearby, on a daily basis, by Paul and Donna and their team.
Paul, who is a leading chef with more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, explained: “We are dedicated to using all the local or regional produce available to us, needless to say we are so lucky living here in the Westcountry, we have local farmers supplying us with their beef, pork and lamb and the fishing communities providing us with the freshest seafood.”
As well as being famous for its food, The Swan also has three comfortable B&B rooms – a double with a queen size bed, another double and a twin. All three are en-suite and have luxury toiletries, towels and linens.
